We Tend to Grow

A morning of dirty hands, good food and new thoughts. We Tend To Grow is a collaboration between Grow Local Colorado, Slow Food Denver and you. Our hope is, we’ll all leave nourished, enriched and a little closer to our food, our communities and each other.
Deep in the soil, the root of a plant is where everything starts. And that’s where this morning will begin as well. We’ll garden a bit*, enjoy a seasonal brunch** prepared by Chef Linda Kiker, talk and laugh together. We’ll likely form some new connections: to the plants, to each other and to the possible difference in our lives those two simple things can make.
We will be gardening at Christ the King Lutheran Church, one of Grow Local Colorado’s gardens. This is their third year of growing in CTK’s garden. This sheet mulch garden was created in 2018 by the congregation and Grow Local Colorado with 36 yards of wood chips and manure. On average this garden produces over 1,000 pounds of fresh produce, all donated to Community Ministry, a food pantry serving southwest Denver.
Tickets are a minimum $10 donation. All proceeds support Slow Food Denver and Grow Local Colorado.

WHAT TO WEAR: MASKS ARE REQUIRED, sturdy shoes (no sandals), sun hat, dress in layers
WHAT TO BRING FOR GARDENING: Water bottle, sunscreen and a preferred gardening tool (optional).
*To comply with state and local regulations concerning COVID-19 we are 1) limiting the number of volunteers, 2) providing sanitized tools, 3) providing hand sanitizer, and 4) providing clean garden gloves if you don’t have your own. 5) If you bring your own gloves, please clean them beforehand and finally 6) for ages 15+
**Brunch will consist of individual mason-jar salad options prepared and served in accordance with state and local regulations concerning COVID-19.
1. Layered green salad in a jar – Chopped lettuce and greens, oregano, carrot, radish, cucumber, with a local honey infused with lavender and lemon dressing – topped with edible flowers
2. Layered grain and greens salad in a jar – using local quinoa, local greens, herbs, micro greens, beets, snap peas, with a mustard dressing
3. SAME Café cookies (regular & gluten-free)
ABOUT YOUR CHEF:
Linda Kiker is a personal chef who operated a business for 20 years here in Denver. In 2015 she stepped away from the business to engage with food in a different way. Then she found Grow Local Colorado. Learning to grow food and reconnect to her community has been deeply rewarding and inspiring for her. She is now a co-director and happily ready to share her love of fresh food with you all today!

For more than 10 years Grow Local Colorado has been growing in the Denver community. We have 17 gardens throughout our city. We are a fully volunteer driven group. We not only plant, tend, harvest and donate food, we grow friendships while learning about the needs of our neighbors. We deliver our produce to over a dozen organizations serving those in need.
