What is your favorite part of cooking with kids?
My favorite part of cooking with the kids/students is their excitement each week when they want to know right away “what are we cooking today?” A little grumbling may occur if someone isn’t interested in the pick but they always get into it.
What has surprised you about cooking with kids?
A few of the things that surprised me about the kids is how much knowledge they actually have regarding cooking. A lot of them cook quite a bit in their home, I had a student yesterday that was telling her friends that in addition to her homework she had to make both her father and mother their lunches for the day. It’s good to hear the students help plan and cook meals as well.
What is something a student has said or done in your classes that you thought was funny or profound?
I always start a new term with “the five tastes”, 5 solutions, 5 bottles and they need to guess the taste. Afterwards, we make a salad and a “ranch style” dressing. Everyone moans about eating salad. I actually had a student tell me she was allergic to lettuce. Once it was made and put together, everyone ate the salad and loved it. Gets me every time, they all LOVE the salad and want to go home and make it. My granddaughter (4 at the time) told me she had salad at school one day, I asked her what kind, she said”ranch”, got to start them young.
What recipes/techniques/activities do students love?
I find all the kids want to be involved with everything. I try to make sure everyone gets a chance to add to the recipe/ task in some way. I do find though that they all like to use the knives, mimicking a great chef with their chopping, whoa, slow down kiddos.
