What is your favorite part of cooking with kids?

I love watching students learn new skills and grow more confident in their abilities each time they help create a dish. I especially love watching students eat the dishes they help make and discuss what they like, don't like, what else they would add, etc. It's very fun watching them develop their own tastes for nutritious foods.

What has surprised you about cooking with kids?

Kids are much more capable of helping to prepare foods than I ever realized. They are excited to learn and even more excited to take on preparation tasks independently. It's wonderful to watch them succeed when taking on tasks and be proud of themselves and each other.

What is something a student has said or done in your classes that you thought was funny or profound?

Some students aren't always excited to cook or try new food at the beginning of the quarter. Slowly but surely, these students open up and are often the ones that are the most excited to prepare and try new things. I've learned that when students are involved in the process and given a pressure-free space to be curious, they are more open to trying new foods than I ever realized they would be.

What recipes/techniques/activities do students love?

My favorite recipes are those where students get to create their own version of a dish based on their tastes. They have the chance to be independent and creative while adding different flavors that taste best to them. They come up with some delicious ideas!
