As summer winds down, we’re excited to share some wonderful Slow Food Denver updates and fill you in on upcoming happenings. Our annual Slow Food Farm Dinner, scheduled for September 7th, is officially sold out! We’re thrilled with the response, but if you missed out on tickets, don’t worry—there’s a waitlist available. Additionally, we’re unveiling our Silent Auction! This offers a fantastic chance to bid on exclusive items before the event. Remember, participation in the auction doesn’t require attending the dinner and it supports our ongoing work. Check out the extensive list of items online, including private dinners, a vacation home in Maine, 2 private foraging walks, a fermentation class, and so much more!
Next month, our team will embark on a journey to Turin, Italy, for the esteemed Terra Madre festival. Held every two years, this international event gathers food producers, chefs, activists, and Slow Food chapters from around the world to discuss sustainable food practices and celebrate local traditions. Slow Food Denver will be presenting in collaboration with the Boulder team. We’re eager to share the experiences and insights we gain from this incredible festival with all of you, so stay tuned for blog posts next month!
In other exciting news, we’ve recently awarded the Snail of Approval to three new establishments: Rootstalk of Breckenridge, Tom's Seafood, and Farm & Market of Denver. These businesses have demonstrated a commitment to quality, community involvement, and intentional sourcing practices, and we’re proud to acknowledge their efforts.
At the Slow Food Farm Dinner, we’ll also be introducing our new Snail Trail Passports. These passports offer a fresh way to explore and enjoy dining experiences at Snail of Approval establishments. With last year’s passports expiring soon, don’t miss the chance to purchase your new one at the event, or online afterwards. More details on the 2024-2025 passports will be available soon.
Our Seed to Plate program has ramped up with the start of the school year, engaging students in learning about local food from seed to plate. We’ll be sharing more updates about this program on our social media channels this year, so follow us to see how we’re inspiring the next generation. With the 2024-2025 school year now officially underway, you can also sign up to volunteer with our Seed to Plate classes throughout the fall at this link. The Seed to Plate afterschool program will be in 39 schools this term, so you're sure to find a site near you and might even decide to become a regular volunteer!
Additionally, this school year marks the second year of our Seed to Plate to Regenerate (SPR) program, a joint effort between SFD, Denver Urban Gardens, and We Don't Waste to bring food systems education to elementary schools. Through interactive gardening and cooking lessons, presentations on food waste, school-wide cafeteria audits, and community events we are aiming to change the food culture of entire schools and build community around food. SPR will be returning to Valdez Elementary, Maxwell Elementary, Goldrick Elementary, Wyatt Academy, and Sabin World School for their second year of programming and adding DCIS at Fairmont for their first year of programming. We are excited to see how our program evolves this school year!
Lastly, please note that our FED Workshops will be on pause for September as we focus on the farm dinner and Terra Madre. However, we’ll return in October with a new course on butchering and preparing a hog in a charcuterie class. Keep an eye out for details and registration information coming soon.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing you at our events and sharing more updates in the near future!
