April 2025 Newsletter

April showers bring… lots of Slow Food Denver fun! With our May workshops right around the corner—Food Sovereignty Panel Discussion and Foraging Series—we’re feeling the busy excitement of spring. This time of year reminds us that building a better food system starts from the ground up: in our gardens, kitchens, classrooms, and communities. Read on to find out how you can help plant the seeds of change this spring.

Our FED Workshops are back this May with two exciting offerings: Food Sovereignty Panel Discussion on May 7th and Foraging Series on May 15th and 29th. In partnership with Patagonia Denver and Denver Food Rescue, the panel will explore what food sovereignty means in our local context—who grows our food, who has access, and how we can all contribute to a more just, meaningful, and resilient system. Join us at Patagonia Denver at 6:30 PM for a powerful conversation featuring voices from the frontlines of food justice work.

Ready to reconnect with the land in a new way? Our Foraging Series kicks off May 15th with guided walks and workshops that teach you how to safely identify, harvest, and prepare edible wild plants in Colorado. Whether you’re new to foraging or deepening your knowledge, this series is a celebration of food, culture, and ecosystem connection. Join us on the 15th at Chatfield Park for a lesson in foraging in the wild and on the 29th at Fleischer Family Farm to learn about foraging in your backyard

We’re kicking off our Monday morning garden sessions with Grow Local Colorado in June, and we’d love to see you there! These peaceful, purposeful mornings are spent tending to local garden that grow food for our community. Volunteer dates are now live via SignUpGenius—a few Mondays are excluded for holidays, so check the schedule and claim your spot early! Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a curious first-timer, all are welcome. Want to visit a farm to volunteer? Get a group of 5 or more people together and we’ll create a tailored volunteer opportunity!

We’re proud to announce Horizon Verjus and Bibamba as the newest recipients of our Snail of Approval award! These businesses represent the best of what Slow Food stands for—delicious, sustainable, and rooted in community care.

From Bibamba’s ethical, bean-to-bar chocolate made right here in Denver to Horizon Verjus’s unique juice of unripe or late harvest grapes that provides a sustainable alternative to citrus or sweeteners in beverages, both embody a deep commitment to quality and innovation. We hope you’ll support them, savor their offerings, and celebrate their Slow values with us.

We’re teaming up with Denver Urban Gardens for a hands-on workshop that invites you to rethink the way food moves through the food system. From composting and seed starting to drying herbs, Explore Your Food Cycle is all about creating intentional habits that support the planet, your health, and your kitchen creativity. Join us Saturday, May 3rd from 9-11AM at the Posner Center for this interactive event.

Slow Food isn’t just active in Denver this spring—our friends at Slow Food Boulder County are also busy with spring energy. They’ve cooked up some impactful events to inform us all about grains! The Boulder chapter is partnering with local organizations like the Grain Chain, Pacifico, and Dryland Distillery to bring you a wide range and depth of knowledge about grains. Check it out here!

Whether you’re volunteering in a garden bed, learning about food sovereignty, or developing new cooking, foraging, or composting skills, you’re part of planting the seeds for a better food system this spring. We’re so grateful to be growing this work alongside you.

Here’s to a delicious and hopeful spring!
