APRIL 2024 NEWSLETTER

Updated: Jul 23

Spring is upon us and with that so many unique events and happenings throughout the city. Embracing the warming weather and beginning of the growing season means it’s time for seed exchanges, gardening classes, plant sales, and so much more. We’re excited to fill you in on many upcoming gatherings both from Slow Food Denver and our partners, such as a restaurant takeover at Coperta, Urban Foraging class through FED, Earth Day seed exchange, and Terra Madre Americas. We invite you to all of these events and more, read on to learn more details on all of these exciting occurrences!

As always, we invite you to join us at our upcoming FED workshop. This installment of the program will feature a course on urban foraging in City Park. We will be joined by experts Andy Conners of Foraged and Kate Armstrong, the Urban Forager. If you’ve ever wanted someone to ask all your fungi and flora foraging related questions, these are the people. We are welcoming all levels of expertise to this class, including those of you that have no previous knowledge of foraging in any setting. This class will take place on May 30th, and it’s already half full. In June, we will invite you to join us for a “how to” class on cooking while camping at Fleischer Farm. Later this summer you can expect workshops on fermentation and gardening featuring some of our amazing local partners.

Although we love our FED Workshops, they are far from the only offerings on our calendar. Friday the 19th we will host a kick-off to all things Earth Day with many of our nonprofit partners. We are co-hosting this kick-off party with the Colorado Rockies and McGregor Square. There will be seeds to share, family friendly activities, and info on being a steward of the environment in our community. This event will mark the start of a week full of Earth Day happenings. Check out our instagram for a full calendar! Another event to note is the upcoming visit of chef William S. Dissen. This James Beard Nominee and Thoughtful Cooking author will be traveling to Denver to promote his new book and partner with one of our favorite chefs, Paul C. Reilly on a collaboration dinner. The reservations are live for this 4 course meal featuring recipes from Thoughtful Cooking. We’ll be there tabling and hope to see you there as well!

Our team is always busy hosting events and volunteer opportunities, but recently we’ve ramped up the frequency at which we venture out from behind our computers to interact with the local community. This month we visited a local business to teach about Slow Food Denver and host a fermentation lesson, introducing attendees to food preservation skills. Our executive director also visited DU with a Seed to Plate instructor to give a presentation about our mission and programs. As our team grows, so too does our capacity for these fun events. As the year progresses, you can expect to see more corporate volunteer days, workshops hosted with new partners, tabling throughout the city, and classes hosted for businesses in Denver. Interested in having SFD visit your office, organize a volunteer day, or table at an upcoming event? Reach out and let us know!
