ARAB/AMERICAN: LANDSCAPE, CULTURE
AND CUISINE IN TWO GREAT DESERTS

Thursday, Feb. 18, 7 p.m.
Gary Paul Nabhan, writer, lecturer and conservation scientist

In this unique program, Gary Nabhan explores the common heritage of desert dwellers in the Middle East and the Southwestern borderlands, and how these seemingly disparate cultures are bound to each other in ways we would never imagine. With an extraordinary ear for language and a truly adventurous palate, Nabhan uncovers surprising convergences between the landscape ecology, ethnogeography, agriculture, and cuisines of the Middle East and the binational Desert Southwest including parts of Colorado. With humor and history, Nabhan reminds both Arabs and Americans of their common ground.

Slow Food members and friends joined consumer forces to purchase 5 bison carcasses at the Gold Medal Trophy Show and Sale at the National Western Stock Show. About twelve members attended the actual auction, with Slow Food Member Andrew Nowak working the paddle. Double J processing processed and packaged the meat and a few kind volunteers made the trip to Pierce, CO to collect our purchases. Everything was divided up and picked up from a few pick-up points in Denver. Everyone involved now has a stocked freezer and is enjoying tasty, healthy bison!

Guests were greeted with a cocktail while sampling local cheeses from Haystack Mountain and Windsor Dairy, paired with Primo Specialty Foods' preserves and 34 degrees crackers. Cook Street chefs prepared dinner which included classic beef burgundy with sweet roasted garlic mashed potatoes, roasted beef with cauliflower gratin, fresh green bean salad with beets and radishes, lamb bracciole with polenta, smoked chicken apple sausage with braised chard and a sweet apple jalousie. All dishes were paired with Colorado wines from Two Rivers, Balistreri and Creekside Wineries. Guests were treated to a reusable Natural Grocers gift bag filled with coupons, local products, producer information and local publications.
